The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), once again carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) under the theme “Utilizing Deep Learning to Develop Adaptive Mathematics Problems”. This program was specifically designed for teachers who are members of the Junior High School Mathematics Teachers Association (MGMP) of Bantul Regency.
The activity was organized through a PkM grant from the Department of Mathematics FMIPA UGM and was held in two sessions: the first on Thursday, 10 July 2025, and the second on Friday, 10 October 2025. Both sessions took place at the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM.
This community service activity was a collaborative effort involving lecturers from the Department of Mathematics UGM, the Department of Computer Science and Electronics (DIKE) UGM, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY). The implementing team consisted of Prof. Dr. Yeni Susanti, Dr. Sumardi, Dr. Irwan Endrayanto, Umi Hanung Mahnuna, M.Sc., Dr. Ari Suparwanto, Dr. Dwi Ertiningsih, Dewi Kartika Sari, Ph.D., Husna Arifah, M.Sc. (UNY), and Afiahayati, Ph.D. (DIKE UGM). The program was also supported by FMIPA UGM administrative staff Emiliana Sunaryani and Siti Aisyah, S.Sos., as well as Titik Suparwati, a doctoral student from the Mathematics Doctoral Program at UGM.
During the first session, Husna Arifah, M.Sc. (UNY) delivered a presentation titled “The Application of Deep Learning for Learning”, while Dr. Afiahayati (DIKE UGM) presented “Deep Learning for Deep Learning?”. The second session featured Dr. Irwan Endrayanto with a presentation on “Contextual Learning through a Deep Learning Approach” and Umi Hanung Mahnuna, M.Sc. who discussed “Deep Learning and Transfer Learning”.
The workshop adopted an interactive format, enabling participants to not only gain theoretical insights but also engage in hands-on discussions and practical exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning applications in mathematics education. Teachers were trained to design and develop adaptive, technology-based mathematics problems aimed at enhancing students’ literacy, competence, and engagement in learning.
This training program is expected to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical capacity in responding to the challenges of 21st-century education. Moreover, it serves as a tangible contribution from the Department of Mathematics toward improving human resource quality and promoting the use of innovative learning technologies in the digital era.
Through this initiative, the Department of Mathematics FMIPA UGM continues to play an active role in expanding the positive impact of mathematical sciences to the broader community, particularly in efforts to enhance the quality of education at the secondary school level.
