Lecture Series: Algebraic Quantum Mechanics

Research in algebra, especially in ring theory and modules, is one of the main priorities of the Algebra Laboratory in the Department of Mathematics, UGM. Of course, strengthening these theories needs to be accompanied by knowledge of their applications to other fields. One of the things that the Algebra Laboratory does to facilitate this is by holding an open lecture series hosted by Department of Mathematics, UGM. The activity initiated by Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti, M.Si. as the Head of the Algebra Laboratory, took the theme “Algebraic Quantum Mechanics” which provides an overview of the relationship between Mathematics and Physics. This series itself is divided into 3 parts and is conducted virtually during June-August 2021.

The first part of the lecture series was carried out on July 26, 2021. At the beginning of the event, the lecture series was officially opened by the Governor of IndoMS Central Java and Yogyakarta Region, Dr. Nanang Susyanto, M.Sc. The event was then continued with talks by two quest speakers, namely Dr.rer.nat. M. Farchani Rosyid from the Department of Physics, UGM and Alexander Jimena Balsomo, Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics, West Visayas State University, Philippines. The first talk was given by Dr.rer.nat. M. Farchani Rosyid with the title “On Quantum Mechanics and its Mathematical Formulation”. He explained what kind of ingredients are involved in the structure of meta-mechanics (quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, and others). He then specifically explained and compared those involved ingredients for quantum mechanics and classical mechanics. The event then continued with a talk by Alexander Jimena Balsomo, Ph.D. entitled “Deformation Quantization in the teaching of Lie group representation”. In his presentation, he mainly talked about relationships between those two types of meta-mechanics discussed in previous talk to the theory of Deformation Quantization and Representation of Lie groups and Lie algebra. At the end of the talk, he also presented several open questions that could be considered as topics for further research.

In general, the first activity went smoothly and was attended by 85 participants from several disciplines. In addition to broadening knowledge related to quantum mechanics and algebra topics, this lecture series is also expected to increase collaborations between researchers from the department of Mathematics UGM with other researchers in the same field or in other fields such as Physics.

The second and third parts of this lecture series are planned to be held on July 24, 2021 and August 21, 2021 by inviting two speakers in each part.

The recording of the first part of lecture series can be accessed through the YouTube channel: Math UGM.
