Community Service: Ushering in the Glory of Mathematics

Yogyakarta – The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), organized a Community Service (PkM) event on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the 7th-floor Auditorium of FMIPA UGM. The event was attended by mentors of the participants of the National Mathematics Competition (LMNas-34 UGM). Simultaneously, LMNas-34 UGM was holding the final round of the competition.

The event commenced with a presentation by Dr. Noorma Yulia Megawati, S.Si., M.Sc., introducing the profile of the Department of Mathematics. This was followed by the introduction of the profiles of the Mathematics and Actuarial Science Study Programs by Zenith Purisha, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Danang Teguh Qoyyimi, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. Subsequently, Dr. Budi Surodjo, M.Si., also provided material and guidance on the Olympiad.

The Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UGM actively contributes to the development of mathematics in the community through tangible actions by faculty members. The theme of this activity is “Anticipating Mathematical Triumph: Technical Guidance for a Distinguished Future Olympiad.” In order to achieve mathematics success at the national level, it is necessary to build a strong foundation from the elementary level. Mathematical Olympiads serve as an ideal platform to train our students and unearth hidden talents.

According to Dr. Budi Surodjo, M.Si., coaching for mathematical Olympiads can cover various materials and learning strategies specifically designed to enhance students’ understanding in solving complex problems. In addition, faculty members also provide insights into problem-solving techniques, critical thinking, and teamwork – skills crucial for facing Olympiad competitions. Faculty members share their experiences, contemporary teaching methods, and mathematical resources that can be utilized to improve the quality of education in schools where the LMNas-34 participants are from.

This community service is part of the long-term vision of the Department of Mathematics to educate a younger generation with advanced mathematical skills. Hopefully, through this activity, we can nurture future leaders in the field of mathematics who can compete on the international stage.
