Preparing A Bright Future for Actuaries at the Indonesian Actuaries Congress 2023

The Society of Actuaries of Indonesia organized the Indonesian Actuaries Congress 2023 with the theme “Shaping Future Actuaries.” The event, held at the Grand Artos Hotel & Convention in Magelang on Thursday, November 23, 2023, served as a crucial platform for discussions and meetings among actuaries to formulate the direction of the profession’s development in the future.

The event drew participation from actuaries, academics, and students. A total of 100 students from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), representing undergraduate programs in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and the master’s program in Mathematics, actively engaged in the congress. Furthermore, two lecturers from the Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UGM, Drs. Danardono, MPH., Ph.D., and Dr. Drs. Gunardi, M.Si., were featured speakers in both panel discussion sessions.

Ade Bungsu, Chairman of the Society of Actuaries of Indonesia, delivered a welcoming address emphasizing the association’s duty to broaden the perspective of stakeholders regarding the role of actuaries. He highlighted that actuaries are not merely calculators whose results can change according to the clients’ requests. Ade Bungsu underscored the importance of enhancing actuaries’ competencies to navigate the dynamics of the industry.

“We must break free from old limitations and embrace new challenges with an open mind and flexible strategies. Today’s meeting is not just a routine gathering but a strategic conclave that will determine the direction of our organization for the years to come,” he explained.

Subsequently, the activities continued with panel discussions covering two main topics. The first panel, titled “The Role of Regulator, University, and Indonesian Actuarial Association in Escalating Actuary Competencies,” involved Indonesian actuarial experts sharing insights on the roles of regulation, universities, and the Society of Actuaries of Indonesia in enhancing actuarial competencies. The second panel focused on the theme “Collaboration of Academic and Insurance Industry in Preparing Professional Actuaries.” In this session, panelists deliberated on the extent to which collaboration between the academic and insurance industries could prepare more professional actuaries ready to face challenges in the field.

The Indonesian Actuaries Congress 2023 not only provided a platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge but also served as a concrete step in designing the future of the actuarial profession in Indonesia. The Congress is expected to provide strategic guidance and innovative solutions to tackle dynamic changes in the financial and insurance industries.
