Industry Lecture “Data Science and Mathematical Modeling for Industry by Bukit Vista” Successfully Engages UGM Mathematics Students

On May 18th, 2024, the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted an Industry Lecture titled “Data Science and Mathematical Modeling for Industry by Bukit Vista.” This event was attended by approximately 90 undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics students, who eagerly participated in the lecture given by guest lecturers from Bukit Vista: Vidiskiu Fortino Kurniawan, Vice President of Engineering, and Putu Widyantara Artanta Wibawa, Business Data Scientist.

The lecture provided in-depth insights into the application of data science in the hospitality industry, as well as the importance of using mathematical models to analyze and optimize business strategies. The material presented not only offered theoretical understanding but also practical insights through case studies faced by Bukit Vista in their business operations. This certainly contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), which emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration in developing sustainable industries.

Through the collaboration between the UGM Department of Mathematics and Bukit Vista, students are encouraged to engage in research and development projects that support the importance of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Such collaborations between academia and industry, as exemplified in this lecture, students not only gain theoretical understanding but also practical skills relevant to industry needs. This Industry Lecture is expected to be one of the initial steps in strengthening the relationship between the educational and industrial sectors, as well as inspiring students to further explore the potential contributions of mathematics in achieving sustainable development goals.

The collaboration between the UGM Department of Mathematics and Bukit Vista will also involve joint research activities. This will provide opportunities for students to directly participate in research projects that impact industry development, enhance their skills in applying mathematical and data science concepts in real-world situations, and broaden their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in this industry.
