Algebra Research Workshop of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM

On Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, 2024, the Algebra Laboratory, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, successfully held an Algebra Research Workshop. This event took place at Griya Persada Convention Hotel and Resort Kaliurang, Yogyakarta. The workshop was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, and undergraduate and graduate students who actively participated in every session. The event was attended by all the Algebra Lab faculty members and 30 undergraduate and graduate students who actively engaged in the workshop.

The workshop began with presentations on algebra research by the faculty members, covering various fields, including:

  • Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti, M.Si.: Research in cryptography, algebraic structures: ring and module theory, derivation.
  • Prof. Dr. Sri Wahyuni, S.U.: Research on ring and module theory, regular modules, and their generalizations.
  • Dr. Budi Surodjo, M.Si.: Research on rings and modules of generalized power series, regular modules, and their generalizations.
  • Dr. rer. nat. Ari Suparwanto, M.Si.: Research in max-plus algebra, matrices over max-plus algebra.
  • Dr. rer. nat. Yeni Susanti, M.Si.: Research on graphs, including graph labeling and algebraic graphs.
  • Dr. Aluysius Sutjijana, M.Sc.: Research in coding theory.
  • Dr. Sutopo, S.Si., M.Si.: Research in algebraic structures (graded rings and modules), matrix theory.
  • Uha Isnaini, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.: Research in cryptography and number theory.
  • Iwan Ernanto, S.Si., M.Sc.: Research in algebraic structures, specifically graded rings and modules, derivation.
  • Ari Dwi Hartanto, S.Si., M.Sc.: Research in computer algebra, Gröbner bases.

One of the highlights of this workshop was the 3 Minute Thesis presentation, participated in by eight students. This competition provided an opportunity for students to present their research concisely, challenging them to convey complex ideas clearly and succinctly.

On the second day, the workshop activities began with a healthy walk to the Kaliurang viewing post park. The workshop concluded with discussions and future research development for the Algebra Lab, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. This Algebra Research Workshop ran smoothly and successfully thanks to the support of all involved parties.

This workshop supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), i.e. SDG 4: Quality Education – By involving faculty and students in research activities and scientific discussions, this workshop supports the achievement of inclusive and quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities. SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Research in algebra, including cryptography and coding theory, contributes to technological innovation and the enhancement of information and communication infrastructure.

This event received full support from the Department of Mathematics, ensuring its successful execution. We hope that the outcomes of this workshop will positively contribute to the development of algebra research in Indonesia.
