Workshop: Mathematical Analysis for Statistics in Celebration of Prof. Dr. Soeparna Darmawijaya’s 86th Birthday

The Department of Mathematics at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is once again hosting a workshop titled “Mathematical Analysis for Statistics.” This workshop holds a special significance as it coincides with the 86th birthday celebration of Prof. Dr. Soeparna Darmawijaya, which falls on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The event will be conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online sessions, and will be held at the 7th Floor Auditorium of FMIPA UGM. In addition to the Mathematics Department’s extended family, Prof. Soeparna’s family will attend the event, making it a meaningful and special occasion.

Dr. Nanang Susyanto, S.Si., M.Sc., M.Act.Sc., Head of the Mathematics Department at FMIPA UGM, delivered the opening remarks. He emphasized that this celebration of Prof. Soeparna’s birthday is also a tribute to mathematical analysis for statistics. The second address was given by Prof. Dr. Paulo C. Rodrigues, President of ISBIS, who was also present at the event. The International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS) is an organization under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), focusing on applications, research, and best practices in business and industrial statistics worldwide.

The workshop features two distinguished speakers from abroad. Prof. Karl Sigman from Columbia University, New York, USA, opened the event with the topic “Introduction to Stochastic Simulation with Applications in Queueing Theory,” while Prof. Jayrold P. Arcede, Ph.D., from Caraga State University, Philippines, discussed “From Random Walks to Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process: Exploring Stochastic Processes for Financial and Ecological Modeling.” Both sessions explore the applications of stochastic theory in contexts relevant to current developments.

In conclusion, this workshop not only serves as a platform for academic advancement but also honors the academic legacy of Prof. Dr. Soeparna Darmawijaya in mathematics and statistics. The event underscores the Department of Mathematics commitment to supporting SDGs, particularly in fostering quality education (SDG 4) in mathematics. The participation of Prof. Paulo, Prof. Karl, and Prof. Jayrold in this international collaboration aims to enhance understanding and promote the latest knowledge in a global context.
