Algebra Guest Lecture Series #3: Ring Derivations and Multilinear Maps and Their Applications in Data Security

Yogyakarta, 16 July 2024 – The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), successfully held the “Algebra Guest Lecture Series #3” on Tuesday, 16 July 2024. The event took place from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM in Conference Room 1, 3rd floor, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM.

In the third session of this guest lecture series, two main speakers were invited to share their knowledge and latest research findings in the field of algebra. The first speaker, Dr. Vaishali Varshney from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India, presented a topic titled “On symmetric n-derivations in rings.” Dr. Varshney discussed the theory of symmetric n-derivations in rings, an important concept in abstract mathematics that has the potential to provide new insights into modern algebra research. Several examples were provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the assumed conditions.

The second speaker was Annisa Dini Handayani, a doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. Annisa presented on the topic “On the security of multilinear maps based on generalized Weil pairing,” exploring the security of multilinear maps based on generalized Weil pairing.

Multilinear maps in cryptography can be used as building blocks for multi-party key exchange, witness encryption, and indistinguishability obfuscation. However, constructing secure and efficient multilinear maps remains an open problem. This presentation highlighted the applications of algebraic theory in cryptography, particularly in the development of more complex and secure systems.

This event not only served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences among academics but also strengthened international research collaboration in algebra. The attendees were highly enthusiastic about the topics discussed and actively participated in the Q&A session.

For those who could not attend in person, the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, provided a Zoom link to follow the event online. This initiative aimed to facilitate participation for those residing outside Yogyakarta and its surroundings.

This guest lecture series is part of the efforts of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, particularly the Algebra Laboratory, to continue supporting and promoting high-quality mathematical research and education. This aligns with SDG no. 4, which is quality education. Similar events with other interesting topics are planned to be held in the future.
