Community Service at SMAN 19 Surabaya: Enhancing Scientific Writing Skills for Teachers

On Friday, July 12, 2024, SMAN 19 Surabaya hosted a Community Service event organized by the PkM Team from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. The team consisted of Prof. Dr. Supama, M.Si., Dr. Aluysius Sutjijana, M.Sc., Atok Zulijanto, M.Si., Ph.D., Dr. Noorma Yulia Megawati, M.Sc., M.Act.Sc., Dewi Kartika Sari, M.Sc., Ph.D., and Nur Khusnussa’adah, M.Sc. They were also assisted by Wira Kurniawan, S.E., and Susiana, A.Md. (academic staff of the Department of Mathematics).

This PkM activity focused on enhancing the scientific writing skills of high school teachers. The program is part of an ongoing effort to improve the academic and professional competencies of educators and to foster a research culture within the school environment. This aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education.

The event was warmly opened by the Principal of SMAN 19 Surabaya, Agustina Pertiwiningrum, M.Pd. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the importance of developing scientific writing skills among teachers. “We hope this program will greatly benefit the teachers in improving the quality of teaching, scientific writing skills, and learning at the school,” said Agustina Pertiwiningrum, M.Pd. The event was attended by 61 teachers from various disciplines at SMAN 19 Surabaya.

The PkM Team from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, presented two topics. The first topic, “Scientific Writing for Teachers,” was delivered by Prof. Dr. Supama, M.Si., Dr. Aluysius Sutjijana, M.Sc., and Atok Zulijanto, M.Si., Ph.D., with Nur Khusnussa’adah, M.Sc., as the moderator. The second topic, “The Use of Statistics in Educational Research,” was presented by Dr. Noorma Yulia Megawati, M.Sc., M.Act.Sc., with Dewi Kartika Sari, M.Sc., Ph.D., as the moderator.

The participants, who were teachers from SMAN 19 Surabaya, were very enthusiastic about each session of the program. They were encouraged to actively discuss and ask questions, as well as share experiences and challenges faced in scientific writing. “This program has been very helpful in understanding the process of scientific writing and provides practical guidelines that can be directly applied,” said one of the participating teachers.

Through this PkM activity, it is hoped that the teachers at SMAN 19 Surabaya will continue to improve their scientific writing skills and contribute more significantly to the development of science and education in Indonesia (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). The PkM event concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and certificates to the participants.

The collaboration between universities and schools in this community service program demonstrates the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals (SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals).
