UGM Statistics Students Win First Place in the Smatic 5.0 National Essay Competition at UNJ

Two students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have once again demonstrated their excellence at the national level. Immanuella Rere Kusumawardhani and Dimaz Andhika Putra from the 2022 Statistics Program successfully secured first place in the Smatic 5.0 National Essay Competition organized by Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ).

This competition is part of the National Statistics Olympiad series, which annually attracts the best students from various universities in Indonesia. This year, Smatic 5.0 challenged participants to present innovative solutions to contemporary problems through statistical analysis and approaches.

The UGM team submitted an essay titled “CornCareX: An Application for Detecting Diseases in Corn Leaves Based on Transfer Learning Convolutional Neural Network.” The essay outlines the concept and implementation of an application that utilizes artificial intelligence technology to automatically and accurately detect diseases in corn leaves. Using a transfer learning approach within convolutional neural networks, the CornCareX application is designed to assist farmers in maintaining the health of their corn crops, ultimately expected to increase productivity and farmer welfare. This initiative contributes to the achievement of SDG 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition through sustainable agriculture.

With its innovative and relevant ideas, this essay captured the judges’ attention and led Immanuella and Dimaz to secure first place. This achievement also reflects UGM students’ ability to integrate statistical knowledge with the latest technology to create practical solutions that benefit society. This supports the achievement of SDG 9, which promotes innovation, infrastructure, and inclusive and sustainable industrialization.

This success not only adds to UGM’s list of academic achievements but also highlights the strong foundation of knowledge and technology taught at the university. It is hoped that this victory will inspire other students to continue innovating and bringing glory to UGM in various national and international events.
