UGM Mathematics Department Students Achieve Success in 2024 Python-Based Data Analysis Competition

Students from the Mathematics Department at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have once again achieved remarkable success at a national competition. In the 2024 Lambung Mangkurat Statistics Competition, which featured the Python-Based Data Analysis (PYSTA) contest, two UGM students secured top positions. Mahardi Nalendra Syafa (Statistics 2022) won 1st place and the Best Code Quality award, while Gian Lucky Saputra (Statistics 2021) claimed 2nd place. This achievement is a source of pride for the UGM Mathematics Department, which consistently supports its students in competing at both national and international levels.

The PYSTA competition is designed to test students’ data analysis skills using the Python programming language. Participants were required to use a limited set of libraries, including numpy, pandas, seaborn, and matplotlib, to analyze data sourced from the South Kalimantan Provincial Statistics Agency (BPS) website. With the theme “Numbers, Action, and Innovation: Solving Challenges with Statistics,” the competition provided students with a real-world challenge to apply their data analysis skills in a more practical context.

The success of Mahardi and Gian demonstrates that UGM students possess high competency in data analysis and programming. The Best Code Quality award won by Mahardi underscores his ability to write efficient and easy-to-understand code, while Gian’s 2nd place finish highlights his strong competitiveness in the contest. These achievements also align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The competition encourages students to continually enhance their skills in technology and innovation, which are essential foundations for sustainable development.

The accomplishments of Mahardi and Gian in PYSTA 2024 are expected to inspire other students to continue excelling and bringing honor to the UGM Mathematics Department in various national and international competitions.
