Department of Mathematics FMIPA UGM Holds Demomatika Series 7

Yogyakarta, 25 September 2024 – The Department of Mathematics FMIPA UGM once again held its regular Demomatika event, this time entering the 7th series. The event took place on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM WIB, held in a hybrid format at Room 1, 3rd Floor of the Department of Mathematics, and also via Zoom Meeting.

Demomatika Series 7 featured Prof. Dr. Ismail Bin Mohd from Universiti Putra Malaysia as the keynote speaker. He presented two important topics: “A Descent Algorithm Using the Three-Step Discretization Method for Solving Unconstrained Optimization Problems” and “Riba Insights and the Development of Interest-Free Loan Funds.” The first topic discussed innovative optimization methods for solving unconstrained problems, while the second topic provided an in-depth review of financial practices based on Sharia principles, particularly related to riba and ethical alternatives to conventional loans.

The topic of interest-free financing presented by Prof. Dr. Ismail is closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, which encourages the development of inclusive economic models and promotes access to ethical and sustainable financing. Through this discussion, participants were encouraged to understand the importance of a fair financial system and how mathematics can contribute to creating innovative solutions in the field of Islamic finance.

The event was moderated by Restu Ananda Putera, a lecturer at UGM, who successfully facilitated the scientific discussion and enriched the dialogue between the speaker and participants. Demomatika Series 7 was attended by students and lecturers who were interested in issues of Islamic finance and mathematical optimization.

This activity is part of the Department of Mathematics FMIPA UGM’s efforts to strengthen scientific collaboration and share knowledge across countries and disciplines, with the aim of advancing research in applied mathematics and Islamic finance. This initiative is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 on Quality Education, which emphasizes the importance of access to inclusive and quality higher education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. By featuring international speakers, this event contributes to improving the quality of education at a global level.

Demomatika will continue to present interesting topics in future series, bringing prominent speakers to enrich academic and professional insights.
