UGM Statistics Team Wins 3rd Place at Statistics Team Competition LOGIKA UI 2024: Innovation in Data Analysis for the Business World

Yogyakarta, October 2024 — Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students continue to achieve remarkable feats. This time, a team from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM, consisting of Gian Luky Saputra and Daud Muhamad Azhari (Statistics 2021), secured third place in the Statistics Team Competition (STC) at LOGIKA Universitas Indonesia (UI) 2024. This prestigious competition, themed “Developing Data Science Applications in Industry 5.0,” provided a platform for Indonesian students to showcase their skills in data science and statistics.

STC is a national competition open to students from various higher education levels, from diploma to undergraduate programs. This year, the competition was participated in by 89 teams from leading universities across Indonesia, including Politeknik Statistika STIS, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Airlangga, and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. The competition was divided into three stages: preliminary, semifinal, and final. The preliminary and semifinal rounds were conducted online, while the final round took place offline at the FMIPA UI on February 4, 2024.

With unwavering determination, Gian and Daud overcame various challenges throughout the competition. In the preliminary round, they tackled essay questions covering stochastic processes, probability theory, mathematical statistics, and combinatorics within a 5-day period. Despite balancing the competition with midterms and Gian’s health struggles, they earned the highest score in the preliminary round, surpassing 88 other teams.

In the semifinal round, they were tasked with a case study on credit score analysis from a pay-later service company. The UGM team employed an innovative approach using the threshold-moving method to handle imbalanced data, a method more effective in business contexts compared to common resampling techniques. This smart solution earned them a spot in the final round, alongside five other top teams.

The final round at UI posed a unique challenge. Gian and Daud had to present their analysis results before a panel of expert judges in business and data science. Although they faced tough questions during the Q&A session, they managed to respond well, demonstrating their mastery of statistical methods relevant to the business world.

“We are incredibly grateful for this achievement, especially after placing fourth in the same competition last year. This motivates us to continue growing and innovating in the field of data science,” Daud remarked.

This achievement opens up opportunities for Gian and Daud to further develop their skills, not only in the academic world but also in making real contributions to the data-driven industry. They hope to continue representing UGM in various competitions in the future.

This success also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, which focuses on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation. Their innovation in data analysis marks an important step in tackling the challenges of Industry 5.0, especially in developing data-driven solutions for the business sector.
