UGM Dominates the Mathematical Analysis and Geometry Day (MaG-D) XV 2024: A Testament to the Brilliance of the Younger Generation in Mathematics

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) once again solidified its position as a leading center of excellence in mathematics education with a stellar victory at the Mathematical Analysis and Geometry Day (MaG-D) XV, hosted by Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Claiming the overall champion title and securing nine individual medals, UGM not only dominated the competition but also emphasized the importance of thorough preparation and teamwork in academic success.

MaG-D XV, which culminated on Saturday, May 4, 2024, is an annual prestigious event that featured 51 teams from top universities across Indonesia. The competition tested participants’ skills in Mathematical Analysis—including Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Geometry, and Calculus—offering a unique opportunity for students to hone their abilities and face challenges on a national level.

UGM sent its five best teams to compete in the semifinals and finals held in person at ITB. Two of UGM’s teams, UGM-1 (Muhammad Fatkhurrohman – Mathematics and Rama Sulaiman) and UGM-6 (Fajar Arif Shodiqin and Bagas Adnan Rasyid – Mathematics), advanced to the grand final, defeating teams from other prominent universities like ITB, Universitas Indonesia (UI), and Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (UNPAR).

In the grand final, the finalists were required to present their solutions to the final problems before a panel of judges composed of ITB lecturers. The competition was fierce, but UGM teams impressed with their mastery of the material and their excellent communication skills. UGM-1 emerged as the Overall Champion, while UGM-6 secured the First Runner-Up title. In addition, nine out of ten members of the UGM teams earned individual medals—an outstanding achievement that made UGM the university with the highest medal count among all participants.

The medals won by UGM teams:

Three Gold Medals: Fajar Arif Shodiqin, Muhammad Fatkhurrohman, Rama Sulaiman

Three Silver Medals: Ikhsanudin Muhammad Nurzaini, Juan Ebenezer Hardyanto, Mohammad Abyan Rasyad

Three Bronze Medals: Aditya Yoga Sadana (Mathematics), Ardian Arif Widiansyah, Jeremy Christian Hutagalung

Beyond the competition, MaG-D XV also provided participants with valuable insights from ITB lecturers on the applications of mathematics in astrophysics, along with promotions for the master’s and doctoral programs offered at ITB in separate sessions. This event successfully fostered enthusiasm among students to further explore career potentials in academia.

UGM’s success at MaG-D XV 2024 is not only a source of pride but also contributes to the broader goal of supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. This achievement reflects the high-quality higher education in Indonesia, capable of producing graduates with strong competencies in exact sciences. By excelling in various categories, UGM reinforces the role of education in enhancing analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to address global challenges, aligning with SDG’s mission to promote inclusive and quality access to higher education.

This victory not only brings great honor to UGM but also inspires the younger generation to take on challenges, prepare diligently, and contribute to the advancement of science in the future.
