UGM Exotic Team Wins 2nd Place at the 2024 National Statistics Olympiad

Two students from the Statistics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Rahma Nur Annisa and Daffa Elgo Santosa, have once again brought honor to their campus by securing second place in the “Dokter Data” National Statistics Olympiad. This competition was organized by the Statistics Study Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) and was participated in by statistics students from various universities across Indonesia.

Together in a team called “Exotic,” Rahma and Elgo demonstrated extraordinary abilities in statistics and data analysis, passing through various stages of the competition, including the preliminary rounds, semifinals, and finals. In the preliminary rounds, they were faced with new and challenging statistical olympiad questions. Relying on their deep understanding of mathematics and statistics, Rahma and Elgo managed to secure a spot in the top 10, thus earning a ticket to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, the competition became even tougher with two challenging stages, namely “Quick Brain” and Data Analysis. In the “Quick Brain” stage, participants were challenged to answer Olympiad questions within a very limited time, and Rahma and Elgo managed to secure third place among the top 10 participants. Next, they entered the Data Analysis stage, where they were given 14 hours, from 10:00 AM to 11:59 PM, to complete a comprehensive analysis. In this stage, the Exotic team presented an innovative paper titled “Realizing Golden Indonesia 2045 Through Neural Network and Traditional Statistics Analysis on Remittance and Manufacturing Dynamics.” With this paper, Rahma and Elgo managed to secure a top five position, leading them to the final round.

The final round was held offline at FMIPA UNDIP on September 28, 2024. In front of the experienced judges, the Exotic team delivered a comprehensive and convincing presentation. Not only did they successfully deliver their analysis well, but Rahma and Elgo were also able to answer all the judges’ questions with full confidence. The stunning presentation and solid Q&A session ultimately brought the Exotic team to second place, making them the runners-up in this prestigious event.

Through their participation and achievements in the Olympiad, Rahma and Elgo contributed to the achievement of SDG 4, “Quality Education,” by demonstrating the importance of statistics and data analysis education for the development of 21st century skills. The paper on remittance analysis and the manufacturing sector aligned with SDG 8, “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” as it utilized data analysis to support economic growth and improve workforce dynamics.

Rahma and Elgo’s success in the National Statistics Olympiad is not only an academic achievement but also demonstrates the importance of collaboration between statistics and modern technologies such as Neural Networks. By combining these two disciplines, they managed to produce innovative solutions to address industry challenges, particularly in remittance analysis and the manufacturing sector. This achievement is expected to inspire other students to continue innovating and competing at the national level, paving the way for greater potential in the development of statistics in Indonesia. The success of the Exotic team proves that with hard work, perseverance, and strong collaboration, Indonesian students are capable of competing and achieving remarkable accomplishments.
