Thesis and Scientific Article Writing Workshop: Enhancing the Competencies of FMIPA UGM Mathematics Master’s Students

The Master’s Program in Mathematics at FMIPA Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a Thesis and Scientific Article Writing Workshop on Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Meeting Room 1 of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM. This workshop was attended by students from the Mathematics Master’s Program, Academic Year 2023/2024. The event aimed to enhance students’ competencies in producing high-quality theses and scientific articles, serving as a key part of their preparation for thesis writing and scientific publication.

The event began with opening remarks by the Head of the Department of Mathematics, Prof. Dr. Sri Wahyuni, S.U., who emphasized the importance of scientific writing skills in supporting students’ academic and professional careers. She expressed her hope that students would apply effective scientific writing techniques to improve the quality standards of their theses and publications.

The first speaker, Uha Isnaini, M.Sc., Ph.D., presented on the topic “Thesis Writing Using LaTeX.” He explained the use of LaTeX as a writing tool that helps students produce academic documents with a professional format and appearance. Uha guided participants in understanding the basics of LaTeX and introduced specific features that simplify the writing process and reference management. Participants were enthusiastic about learning LaTeX due to its capability to produce neat documents that meet scientific publication standards.

The second session, titled “Strategies and Tips for Writing a Thesis,” was led by Made Tantrawan, M.Sc., Ph.D. In this session, Made Tantrawan provided a step-by-step guide to tackling the challenges of thesis writing, including time management, data handling, and strategies for completing each chapter effectively. He also shared tips on maintaining consistency in writing and managing stress during research and writing. Made emphasized the importance of discipline and perseverance to achieve optimal results.

In addition to the main sessions, the workshop included a Q&A and discussion segment. Students were eager to share experiences and receive practical advice on thesis and publication writing. The workshop was intended to provide valuable support for FMIPA UGM Mathematics Master’s students in completing their final projects and developing impactful scientific publications.

The workshop received positive responses from participants, who felt that the new knowledge gained was beneficial. The students expressed hope that similar workshops would continue to be held as part of ongoing academic support. The Master’s Program in Mathematics at FMIPA UGM hopes that through this workshop, students can complete their theses with high quality and contribute to impactful scientific publications. The event was closed by the Secretary of the Mathematics Master’s Program, Dr. Indarsih, M.Si., with the hope that similar activities will foster an academic environment that supports quality education and scientific writing skills for students, in line with SDG 4.
