Yogyakarta, December 6, 2024 – Dr. Nanang Susyanto, S.Si., M.Sc., Chair of the Mathematics Department at FMIPA Universitas Gadjah Mada, received the Best Department Management Award at the 2024 FMIPA Appreciation Night. This award was presented in recognition of his innovative leadership and dedication to advancing the Mathematics Department, which has shown significant improvement in various aspects, despite being led by someone considered relatively young.
Dr. Nanang emphasized that the award is a result of the collective hard work of the entire team at the Mathematics Department. He highlighted the importance of dedication, innovation, and teamwork as keys to success. For him, being young is not a limitation but rather an opportunity to demonstrate that positive change can be achieved through a willingness to learn, listen, and collaborate. He views the award not only as recognition but also as motivation to continue contributing the best to the department and the university.
In his role as Chair of the Department, Dr. Nanang focuses on consistent implementation of policies. He ensures that every sub-unit under the Mathematics Department fulfills its duties in accordance with the established Structure of Organization and Governance (SOTK). By emphasizing effective communication and strong teamwork, the Mathematics Department has achieved improvements in operations, resource management, and academic accomplishments.
Under his leadership, the Mathematics Department has also introduced several innovations. One strategic move was to provide flexibility for undergraduate students in choosing their Final Project (Tugas Akhir, TA) format. Students can now choose between a regular thesis, project-based, publication-based, or even group-based final projects. This initiative is designed to accommodate diverse student interests, whether in academic research or practical applications. Additionally, the department continues to foster a balance between fundamental and applied research, ensuring that research outcomes not only enrich knowledge but also have a tangible impact on society and industry.
Dr. Nanang envisions the Mathematics Department as a national leader in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science, while also becoming increasingly competitive on the international stage. He hopes the department can make meaningful contributions to solving societal and national problems, as well as producing graduates who bring pride to the university at a global level. Through hard work, innovation, and collaboration, Dr. Nanang is confident that this vision can be achieved together.
This award underscores that innovative and collaborative young leadership can have a significant impact on an institution. Dr. Nanang’s success is expected to inspire younger generations to continue contributing and striving for excellence for the benefit of society and the nation.
