Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, successfully organized an Algebra Colloquium on Monday, February 3, 2025, discussing the latest research on a uniform formula for enumerating integer matrices with a given determinant and height. The event, held in Conference Room 1 of the Department of Mathematics, featured Muhammad Afifurrahman, a Ph.D. student at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, as the keynote speaker. The discussion, moderated by Dr. Mu’amar Musa Nurwigantara, was attended by faculty as well as undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students interested in algebra research. In addition to in-person attendance, the event was also live-streamed on Zoom for online participation.
In the first session, Muhammad Afifurrahman presented his research conducted in collaboration with Chandler C. Corrigan (UNSW). He explained the mathematical approach used to formulate a unified formula for counting integer matrices with specific determinants and heights. This study has not only theoretical significance in the field of algebra, but also has the potential to make significant contributions to the analysis of matrix structures in various mathematical applications.
After the main session, the discussion continued with an exchange session on academic life at UNSW. Muhammad Afifurrahman provided insights into the coursework, the research environment, and the challenges and opportunities of pursuing a Ph.D. in Australia. This session provided valuable perspectives for students interested in continuing their studies abroad, particularly in mathematics.
The enthusiasm of the participants was evident throughout the event, especially during the question and answer session, which provided an opportunity for direct discussion with the speaker. The participants highly appreciated the new insights gained, both in algebraic research and in the academic experience at UNSW.
