Guest Lecture on Actuarial Capita Selecta B: “Population and Employment Dynamics in the Development of Social Security in Indonesia”

The Actuarial Capita Selecta B guest lecture featured Dr. I Dewa Gede Karma Wisana, Ph.D., Head of the Demography Institute at FEB UI, as the guest speaker. Held online via Zoom, the session explored the theme “Population and Employment Dynamics in the Development of Social Security in Indonesia.”

This lecture discussed demographic aspects of modeling social security programs. As a course focusing on the actuarial modeling of social security programs, understanding population and employment dynamics is a fundamental basis for defining objectives, scope, and assumptions in modeling.

The event was opened by Dr. Danang Teguh Qoyyimi, ASAI, Ph.D., who introduced the main speaker. During his presentation, Dr. I Dewa Gede Karma Wisana explained how changes in population structure and employment trends in Indonesia could impact future social security schemes.

Following the presentation, an interactive Q&A session took place. Several participants enthusiastically asked questions about the relationship between demographic factors and actuarial modeling in social security. The discussion became even more engaging when addressing the ongoing transition from a pay-as-you-go system to a fully funded scheme.

“Yesterday’s KSAB class provided deep insights into Indonesia’s workforce, particularly in relation to the changing population pyramid and its impact on labor social security. Our discussion highlighted how shifting age structures could influence the funding system for labor social security and the potential challenges ahead. Pak Dewa also shared valuable perspectives on the actuarial assumptions that could be applied to model sustainable labor social security scenarios. Overall, the session was not only technically insightful but also highly relevant to real-world social issues,” said Twenty Yunita, a student of the Actuarial Capita Selecta B course.

This guest lecture offered valuable insights for students on the challenges and strategies for developing social security systems. Hopefully, the knowledge gained will serve as a strong foundation for designing sustainable actuarial solutions in the future.
