Yogyakarta – The Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, held its annual Syawalan and Halalbihalal gathering on Saturday (April 12, 2025) to strengthen ties among its academic community during the month of Syawal 1446 H. The event began at 10:00 AM at the RMJT Soehakso Auditorium (A1.06–A1.07), 1st floor, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM.
The event was attended by the extended family of the Department of Mathematics, including lecturers, administrative staff, retirees, and student representatives. It served as a moment for forgiveness, reconnection, and reinforcing togetherness after the holy month of Ramadan.
Syawalan and Halalbihalal is a cherished annual tradition at the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, celebrated every Syawal. The event began with an opening by the Master of Ceremony, followed by a Qur’an recitation by Restu Ananda Putra, S.Si., M.Aktr. The Head of the Department, Dr. Nanang Susyanto, S.Si., M.Sc., M.Act.Sc., then delivered welcoming remarks and officially opened the event. The audience was also introduced to new faculty members who recently joined the department.
The highlight of the event was a religious talk and prayer session delivered by Prof. Dr. Ir. Sukamta, ST., MT., IPU., ASEAN Eng., a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and the Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) Ngaglik Branch for the 2025–2030 period. In his talk, Prof. Sukamta emphasized the significance of the month of Syawal as a time for self-improvement and spiritual victory.
“Syawalan is not merely a moment to seek forgiveness, but a time to reflect on lebar—for completing the fast, lebur—for the forgiveness of sins, labur—for the purification of the soul, and luber—as a symbol of extending benefits to others,” he explained.
He closed his talk with a light-hearted yet reflective remark: “May our relationships become linear, not complex, and certainly not undefined. Life, after all, isn’t about square roots, but about nurturing strong roots of brotherhood.”
The event concluded with a Syawalan pledge led by the Head of the Undergraduate Mathematics Program, Dr. Sutopo, S.Si., M.Si., followed by a handshake session symbolizing mutual forgiveness. The gathering then continued with a friendly reception until 1:00 PM, marked by a warm and convivial atmosphere.
This event is expected to further strengthen the spirit of togetherness, kinship, and solidarity among members of the academic community, while also reinforcing the foundation for collaborative work within the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM.
