Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UGM, Prof. Dr. Drs. Gunardi, M.Si., highlighted the contribution of Mathematics, Statistics, and Stochastics in the field of Actuarial Science. This was emphasized in his inaugural address for the Professorship in Actuarial Science delivered at the UGM Senate Hall on Tuesday (June 17).
In his speech titled “Dari Teori ke Realita: Kontribusi Matematika, Statistika, dan Stokastika dalam Ilmu Aktuaria“, Prof. Gunardi underlined the importance of understanding, measuring, and managing risks, particularly in the insurance, finance, and investment industries. Actuarial science plays a significant role in data and probability-based decision making.
Not only presenting academic thoughts, Prof. Gunardi also shared his research journey from 2009 to the present, covering various sectors such as agriculture, health, insurance, and climate change.
“As academics and practitioners in the field of actuarial science, we have a great responsibility to continue developing more innovative methods and contributing to the construction of a more stable and sustainable financial system. I hope this field continues to grow and brings broad benefits to society,” said Prof. Gunardi.
After the ceremonial presentation of the professorial sash, the Chair of the Board of Professors, Prof. Dr. M. Baiquni, M.A., stated that Prof. Gunardi is one of 532 active Professors at UGM, and one of 56 active Professors among the 76 Professors that the Faculty of MIPA UGM has ever had.
With the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Drs. Gunardi, M.Si. as Professor, the Faculty of MIPA UGM officially has its first professor in the field of Actuarial Science. This inauguration marks a significant milestone in the development of actuarial science in Indonesia, and further strengthens the contribution of mathematics and statistics in addressing real-world challenges across various sectors of life.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by university leaders, academic colleagues, students, as well as family and close relatives. This moment symbolized Prof. Gunardi’s long dedication to higher education, research, and community service.
With a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to developing impactful knowledge, Prof. Gunardi hopes that actuarial science can increasingly play a role in building a resilient social and economic system in the face of future uncertainties.
