The Role of Actuaries in the Development of Digital Insurance (Insurtech): A Public Lecture with M. Zamachsyari, Chair of the IIS Advisory Board

Yogyakarta—The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a public lecture titled
“The Role of Actuaries in the Development of Digital Insurance (Insurtech)” on Wednesday (April 29, 2026). The event took place at the Herman Yohanes Auditorium, 7th floor, from 09:00 to 11:00 WIB, and was attended by undergraduate to doctoral (S1–S3) students of the Department of Mathematics, with the majority coming from the Actuarial Science undergraduate program.

This public lecture was organized as a collaborative initiative to provide strategic insights into the development of digital insurance technology (insurtech), future challenges, and the role of actuaries in innovation and risk management.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary of the Actuarial Science Study Program, Danang Teguh Qoyyimi, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., outlined plans for curriculum development, including the introduction of a new course on Islamic insurance in the coming year. He encouraged students to take advantage of this opportunity to broaden their perspectives beyond classroom theory.

Echoing this, the President of the Islamic Insurance Society (IIS) for the 2023–2026 period, Edi Setiawan, S.E., M.E., FIIS., introduced the IIS, covering its profile, activities, and collaborative programs established with various universities. “We hope this collaboration will continue and provide broader benefits for both academia and industry,” he stated.

The main session was delivered by M. Zamachsyari, Operational Director of PT Asuransi Jiwa Syariah Kitabisa and Chair of the IIS Advisory Board. He emphasized that the core of the insurance industry lies in risk management. “To talk about insurance is to talk about risk,” he asserted.

In his presentation, Zamachsyari provided an in-depth discussion on conventional versus Islamic insurance business models, perspectives from fiqh muamalah, and the role of actuaries in insurtech and digital transformation at the national level. He highlighted that Islamic insurance (takaful) upholds transparency from the outset. “In Islamic insurance, the mechanisms and provisions regarding participants’ rights and obligations are clearly defined from the beginning,” he explained.

He also demonstrated the SalingJaga platform by Kitabisa as a concrete example of insurtech implementation. The platform functions as a social safety net based on mutual cooperation, operating under the tabarru’ contract.

The question-and-answer session was highly interactive, with students actively engaging in discussions on various topics, including alternative financial solutions for emergencies without involving interest (
riba), in line with the principles of Islamic insurance.

Through this public lecture, students are expected not only to gain theoretical understanding but also practical insights into the contemporary Islamic insurance industry. This event marks an important step in preparing future actuaries to face the challenges and opportunities in the era of digital transformation.
