AKSIOMA 2025: Strengthening Fellowship and Collaboration among UGM Mathematics Graduate Students

Yogyakarta, 20–21 September 2025 — The Mathematics Graduate Student Association (HIMPASTIKA) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), once again organized its annual event titled Ajang Kenalan dan Silaturahmi Orang Matematika (AKSIOMA), or Mathematics Fellowship and Introduction Gathering. The two-day event took place at three venues: Meeting Room 1, 3rd Floor of the Department of Mathematics, Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas (GIK) UGM, and Villa Hawila, Kaliurang. A total of 56 participants from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts took part in the activities, joined by the Head of the Department of Mathematics, academic administrators, and alumni who participated online.

The event aimed to foster stronger bonds among students from different cohorts, build connections with alumni and program managers, and cultivate a sense of togetherness that supports a conducive academic atmosphere. Beyond networking, the program also encouraged the development of essential soft skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork among graduate students.

The event commenced on Saturday morning in the Department of Mathematics Meeting Room with the singing of “Indonesia Raya” and “Hymne Gadjah Mada.” In his welcoming remarks, M. Syadam Purwanto, Chair of HIMPASTIKA 2025, emphasized the organization’s role as an active, inclusive, and inspiring platform for graduate students. The event was officially opened by Dr. Nanang Susyanto, M.Sc., Head of the Department of Mathematics, who underscored the importance of maintaining balance between organizational involvement and academic completion to support holistic student growth.

The program continued with an alumni sharing session representing four fields of specialization: Analysis (Khoirul Anwar, S.Si., M.Sc.), Algebra and Combinatorics (Era Setya Cahyati, S.Si., M.Sc.), Statistics, Data Science, and Actuarial Science (Abdul Aziz, S.Mat., M.Sc.), and Applied and Computational Mathematics (Ghiffari Ahnaf Danarwindu, S.Si., M.Sc.). The alumni shared insights on academic experiences and career paths, offered motivation, and provided guidance for students in navigating academic and professional challenges. Following the session, participants joined a campus tour around FMIPA and GIK UGM to explore academic facilities and collaborative spaces. In the afternoon, the group proceeded to Villa Hawila, Kaliurang, for the evening gathering activities.

At the villa, the program continued with a HIMPASTIKA organizational sharing session led again by M. Syadam Purwanto. The session provided an opportunity for the organization’s committee to share leadership experiences, introduce the structure of HIMPASTIKA, and discuss the dynamics of graduate student activities. In the evening, participants took part in mini games designed to strengthen teamwork and camaraderie, followed by a bonfire session, symbolizing unity and the collective spirit of the HIMPASTIKA family.

The following morning began with group exercise, promoting physical well-being and informal interaction among participants. Afterwards, participants engaged in an outbound session facilitated by MDP Consulting, featuring team-based games focused on communication, coordination, and leadership in collaborative settings. These activities provided an enjoyable yet meaningful non-formal learning experience that supported students’ personal and interpersonal skill development.

To conclude the event, Prof. Dr. Sri Wahyuni, S.U., Head of the Master’s Program in Mathematics, expressed her appreciation to the committee and participants for their enthusiasm and active participation throughout the event. She conveyed her hope that AKSIOMA would continue to serve as a platform for strengthening fellowship among HIMPASTIKA members and for encouraging positive contributions to the advancement of mathematics and academic life at UGM. The event officially ended with a group photo session led by Wiwied Ishartuti (2025 period), marking a new and optimistic beginning for HIMPASTIKA 2025 in implementing collaborative, sustainable, and impactful programs for the academic community.
