Art & Math: Live Demo Coding Enliven MIPA Expo 2024

Yogyakarta, October 16, 2024 – In the MIPA Expo 2024, the Department of Mathematics presented a Live Demo Coding session led by Dr. Zenith Purisha, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., assisted by Daffa Elgo Santosa, a Statistics student from the class of 2022. During the event, they showcased live coding of a function in front of expo visitors, specifically high school students.

In this demo, Dr. Zenith Purisha and Daffa Elgo introduced the fundamentals of statistical programming and simple coding applications using the popular software RStudio, which is commonly used for statistical analysis and data visualization. Zenith guided the participants by demonstrating the creation of interactive graphs. Daffa provided examples of programming in R used to create images or visualizations of geometric shapes, specifically a flower shape using polar coordinates.

Not only theoretical in nature, this demo session also gave visitors the opportunity to try coding hands-on. Participants were invited to experience writing code, running scripts, and seeing the results. Through this Live Demo Coding, students could see how abstract mathematical concepts, such as polar coordinates and trigonometric functions (sine and cosine), can be translated into visually appealing forms, such as flower patterns.

This coding demo not only introduced students to the basics of programming but also encouraged them to explore how the mathematical concepts learned in school can be creatively implemented in attractive visual forms. This interactive experience is expected to spark students’ interest in the fields of science and technology, as well as broaden their understanding of the importance of programming skills in the digital era.

The MIPA Expo 2024, which will run until October 19, 2024, provides a platform for faculty and students to share knowledge and the latest innovations in various scientific fields, including mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science. Events like the Live Demo Coding are a testament to the commitment of the Department of Mathematics at UGM in supporting quality education and innovation, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 and SDG 9).
