The Department of Mathematics, FMIPA Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to strengthen its contribution to industrial development by actively participating in the Volantis-FMIPA UGM Accelerator Program. This program aims to bridge the gap by providing support for researchers and startups to develop their research into products and services that are relevant and ready to be implemented in industry. The program offers funding, incubation, and access to industrial partners, and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of experts from FMIPA UGM. This aligns with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
As a demonstration of its commitment to the program, the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, involves one of its academics, Uha Isnaini, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., who currently serves as the Director of Innovation Development for Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science. His presence is expected to make a significant contribution through relevant mathematical approaches to modern industrial challenges.
During the Jogja Innovator Summit 2024, held on Friday, October 18, 2024, Dr. Uha Isnaini emphasized the critical role of mathematics in advancing various industrial sectors. “Mathematics forms the foundation for many innovations, including in healthcare through epidemiological modeling, in data security with cryptographic algorithms, and in risk management through probability and statistical analysis. With a strong mathematical approach, we can help various industrial sectors become more efficient and resilient in facing future challenges.”
The role of mathematics in industry cannot be underestimated. It serves as a fundamental pillar across various sectors, including optimizing production processes, risk management, data analysis, and technological innovation. A concrete example is the use of statistics in data-driven decision-making, which helps companies predict and analyze market trends. Furthermore, actuarial science plays a significant role in the insurance and financial industries by providing accurate calculations of risks and investment values. This application supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, contributing to economic growth through mathematics-based innovation.
Through the Volantis-FMIPA UGM Accelerator Program, the Department of Mathematics reaffirms its commitment to collaborate with various stakeholders, such as technology startups and research institutions. Thus, the Department of Mathematics, UGM, is ready to support innovative solutions that will have a broad impact on industrial and academic development.
