UGM Mathematics Department Hosts Research Talk and Discussion: “A Glimpse of Scott Topology” and Ph.D. Study Opportunities at NTU/NIE Singapore

On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the Mathematics Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada successfully held a Research Talk and Discussion titled “A Glimpse of Scott Topology” in the 3rd Floor Meeting Room of the FMIPA Mathematics Department. The event attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty and students deeply interested in the latest developments in topology research. The keynote speaker, Assoc. Prof. Ho Weng Kin, Ph.D., a topology expert from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, delivered a comprehensive presentation moderated by Hadrian Andradi, M.Sc., Ph.D.

The discussion began with an introduction to basic topology concepts, such as open intervals, open sets, and convergence, which serve as foundational elements for a deeper understanding of topological space theory.

In the core session, Assoc. Prof. Ho introduced Scott topology, a non-Hausdorff topological space often considered a unique example beyond classical topology. He explained that while Hausdorff spaces are regarded as standard in many theories, non-Hausdorff spaces like Scott topology offer a rich new perspective for further exploration. His presentation covered key concepts such as Scott open sets, Scott continuous maps, and algebraic structures relevant to order theory.

In addition to discussing topology, Assoc. Prof. Ho provided valuable guidance on achieving success in mathematical research, including the application process for Ph.D. programs at NTU/NIE. He outlined essential skills for pursuing a career as a mathematics researcher, common challenges faced, and the intellectual and professional rewards that can be gained in academia. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Ho offered a detailed overview of the application process for Ph.D. studies at NTU/NIE, covering registration periods, English proficiency or GRE requirements, scholarship opportunities, and strategic steps prospective students should take.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, offering participants a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the speaker. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the new insights gained, particularly regarding research opportunities, practical applications of Scott topology, and valuable information about the Ph.D. application process at NTU/NIE.
