Innovation in Visualization and Understanding of Limits: UGM Students Gain Recognition at Kamindo Competition

Four teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) achieved remarkable success at the 2nd Calculus Paper and Poster Competition organized by the Indonesian Mathematical Analysis Community (Kamindo). The event began with an online preliminary round starting on June 10, 2024, and culminated in an in-person final round held on July 31, 2024, at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).

The four UGM teams that advanced to the finals in Bandung consisted of two teams in the Paper Category and two teams in the Poster Category. The UGM-Mathematics-1 Paper Category team was represented by Slamet Ramadhan and Ikhsanudin Muhammad Nurzaini, while the UGM-Mathematics-2 Paper Category team was represented by Aldanda Brillian Dhasa Aprilian and Iqbal Adisna Atmaja. In the Poster Category, the UGM-Mathematics-1 team consisted of Aditya Yoga Sadana and Kasih Bijaksana Karunia Ilahi, while the UGM-Mathematics-2 team was represented by Katherine Angelika Budianto and Setiti Budi Utami.

During the preliminary round, participants were required to submit papers or posters online through a link provided by the organizers. In the Poster Category, participants were given a theme to develop into an informative poster. In the Paper Category, participants were given a problem to solve and write up in LaTeX, adhering to the specified guidelines. The themes given for the Poster Category were “Limits of Rational Functions” and “Limits of Composite Functions.” The evaluation focused on originality, clarity and accuracy of information, as well as creativity and uniqueness of the poster.

In the final round, the organizers provided different problems and topics than those given in the preliminary round, which participants had to work on within the given time frame. The final round was held at the CAS and CRCS buildings at ITB, where the finalists presented their works to the panel of judges, followed by a Q&A session. In the Poster Category final, the topic was “L’Hôpital’s Rule,” and participants were judged based on their understanding of the mathematical problem presented.

During the event, a public lecture discussing topics related to Pi was also held, broadening the participants’ knowledge of mathematical analysis. The competition was attended by many Mathematical Analysis lecturers from various universities, both as organizers and supervisors, as the event coincided with the International Conference on Mathematical Analysis and Its Applications (ICONMAA).

UGM’s achievements in this competition were truly outstanding. The UGM-Mathematics-1 team won the gold medal in the Poster Category, while the UGM-Mathematics-2 team earned the silver medal. In the Paper Category, the UGM-Mathematics-1 team again secured the gold medal, and the UGM-Mathematics-2 team received the silver medal. In addition to the medals, the winners also received books from ITB Press as prizes.

This success not only reflects the individual achievements of the students but also demonstrates their ability to produce work that benefits the broader educational community. Their work can serve as innovative teaching material, helping to expand access to high-quality mathematical knowledge, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes the importance of providing inclusive and quality education for all.
