Guest Lecture on Actuarial Capita Selecta B: “Social Security from the Perspective of National Development Strategy”

Yogyakarta – Social security is not merely a form of protection but also a crucial strategy in economic development. This was emphasized in the Capita Selecta Actuarial B (CSAB) Guest Lecture, themed “Social Security from the Perspective of National Development Strategy,” organized by the Actuarial Science Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event, held online via Zoom on Saturday, March 8, 2025, featured Dr. Iene Muliati, MM, FSAI, a social security expert and former member of the National Social Security Council, as the keynote speaker.

The lecture was attended by over 130 participants, including students from the UGM Actuarial Science Study Program, attendees of the Sit-In Program, lecturers, and members of the general public. Dr. Iene Muliati explained that social security not only functions as social protection but also serves as a strategic instrument for national economic development. She further elaborated on the challenges and opportunities in implementing Indonesia’s social security system and its effectiveness in promoting community welfare.

The discussion and Q&A session were led by Danang Teguh Qoyyimi, Ph.D., ASAI, a lecturer in the CSAB program. Topics covered included the importance of soft skills for actuaries, actuarial challenges in Indonesia’s social insurance, and the government’s role in fostering synergy between BPJS and private insurers.

Moving forward, actuaries are encouraged to develop a more comprehensive social security model to strengthen Indonesia’s social protection system. Universities are expected to design more specialized curricula to better align with the actuarial industry’s needs, while the government is urged to enhance data integration and periodically review BPJS policies.

This guest lecture is expected to provide valuable insights to participants and foster collaboration among academics, practitioners, and the government in optimizing Indonesia’s social security system.
