It is undeniable that the development of science and technology cannot be separated from the role of women. In recognition of this role, the United Nations in 2015 designated 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In order to celebrate the day and to implement the work program of the Algebra Laboratory of Mathematics Department FMIPA UGM in 2022, the Department of Mathematics through the Algebra Laboratory held several series of algebra colloquiums by presenting speakers from female mathematicians and female students.
The first algebra colloquium series presented two speakers, Prof. Dr. Sri Wahyuni and Dr. Yeni Susanti, both lecturers at the Mathematics Department FMIPA UGM. Each of them brought topics related to generalizations of some concepts in rings to modules and algebraic graphs over rings. This activity was held online on Saturday 19 February 2022 and was attended by around 110 participants. This first series colloquium was preceded by an official opening by the Secretary of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Nanang Susyanto who really appreciated the organization of this event.
The next series then was held on Wednesday 23 February 2022 by presenting guest speakers, namely Dr. Intan Muchtadi-Alamsyah from the Algebra Research Group FMIPA ITB who presented the topic of Generalized quasi cyclic codes, which is related to the role of module theory in coding theory, and Prof. Dr. Indah Emilia Wijayanti from the Mathematics Department FMIPA UGM who brought the topic of Essential Submodules and Small Submodules. The activity, which was held online in the afternoon, was enthusiastically attended by around 60 participants.
The last series, the Algebra Colloquium Series 3, was organized on Wednesday afternoon, 2 March 2022, which gave the opportunity for the Master Study Program student in Mathematics FMIPA UGM, Niswah Qonita, S.Si to deliver a presentation on the theme of bipartite graphs and finite groups. In addition, Naelufa Syifna Wifaqotul Muna, S.Si, one of the alumni of Mathematics Undergraduate Study Program FMIPA UGM, also delivered her presentation entitled “Beautiful identities of Integer Partitions”. The enthusiasm of about 70 participants who attended was seen from their activeness in asking questions to the presenters during the question-and-answer session.
In general, the Algebra Colloquium Series 1 to 3 were successful and went smoothly. The success of the event was inseparable from the role of the hosts who had guided the discussion very well, namely Uha Isnaini, Ph.D, Iwan Ernanto, S.Si., M.Si, and Mu’amar Musa Nurwigantara, S.Si. The series of colloquiums was closed by the Head of the Algebra Laboratory, Prof. Dr. Indah Emilia Wijayanti on 2 March 2022, by conveying the hope that all mathematicians will continue to be enthusiastic about researching both in algebra and other fields of mathematics.
