Mathematics for All: Collaboration of UNS, ITB, and UGM in the Math Expo at SMA Pradita Dirgantara

In collaboration with Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret (UNS) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), the Department of Mathematics at Universitas Gadjah Mada carried out a Community Service (PkM) initiative on November 9, 2024, at SMA Pradita Dirgantara. The event, titled Math Expo, showcased various interactive games based on basic mathematical concepts, including sudoku, shut the box dice, and math problems presented in the form of card games. The Math Expo booth received great enthusiasm from students eager to learn more about mathematics.

The event did not stop at the exhibition; it continued with a talk show session titled “Let’s Get to Know the Role of Mathematics and Your Aspirations!” featuring speakers Shella Meisy, Employer Branding Analyst from PT Asuransi Tugu Pratama Indonesia Tbk., and Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA, a lecturer from Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret. “Mathematics is continuously used in every major. Even my major, psychology, which I initially thought wouldn’t involve mathematics, is actually filled with math, statistics, and calculations,” Shella explained in one of her statements.

In this talk show session, Dr. Sutanto also discussed the career prospects for mathematics graduates. “Not only becoming an academic or teacher, but career fields that are trending lately also include politicians. Who says politicians don’t use mathematics, especially statistics?” he remarked.

Through this expo and talk show, it is hoped that more people will become aware of and interested in mathematics as an enjoyable subject, aligning with SDG 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Collaboration between universities to create a superior, innovative, and inclusive educational climate is expected to remain strong in the future.
