Students from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, have once again achieved outstanding success on the national stage. Fabima Fadhlin Minallah Z., a Statistics student from the Class of 2022, secured second place in the prestigious Statistical Project for Smart Student (SPSS) competition organized by Binus University. This competition tested the students’ skills in presenting data creatively and informatively through infographics.
With the general theme Insight Infusion: Fostering Exponential Growth with Data, the competition aimed to encourage students to be more aware of the potential of data in advancing various sectors of life. Fabima’s data analysis skills not only have academic relevance but also contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Fabima demonstrated her excellence in comprehensively analyzing data and presenting it in an engaging and easily understandable visual format. Her ability to visualize data through infographics is expected to support better data-driven decision-making, which is key to improving the quality of education (SDG 4), strengthening infrastructure and innovation across sectors (SDG 9), and promoting stronger partnerships in data management (SDG 17).
The competition selection process was rigorous, beginning with registration from August 14 to September 13, 2024. After passing the preliminary round held from September 14 to 21, 2024, Fabima was selected to advance to the finals. On September 28, 2024, she delivered an impressive presentation that captivated the judges and earned her second place.
This achievement is tangible proof that UGM students, particularly from the Department of Mathematics, can compete at the national level by prioritizing quality and innovation in the field of statistics. Fabima hopes that her success will inspire her peers to continue creating and making positive contributions to society through data analysis expertise.
