A team of students from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, consisting of Gian Luky Saputra (Statistics, 2021) and Daud Muhamad Azhari (Statistics, 2021), presented an exceptional data analysis project that not only earned them first place in the National Data Analytics Competition (NDAC) at EPSILON UNP 2024 but also provided a meaningful contribution to the understanding of sustainable economics through spatial analysis.
Their project, focusing on the future Nusantara Capital (IKN), illustrates how data can be leveraged to support better and more sustainable economic development. Using spatial regression analysis, Gian and Daud mapped the economic potential and challenges faced by IKN, and how this city can transform into a more resilient new economic center. Their work is not only relevant to Indonesia’s economic development but also offers data-driven solutions that can be applied to other regions facing similar challenges.
The process that Gian and Daud underwent to produce this work was no easy task. Competing with more than 400 teams from various top universities in Indonesia, they managed to deliver a comprehensive report. In the final round, they presented their analysis in front of experienced data analysis judges, answering a wide range of questions that tested their depth of understanding and the application of their methods.
Despite fierce competition from other teams, including renowned institutions like STIS Statistical Polytechnic, IPB University, and Universitas Padjajaran, Gian and Daud demonstrated their excellence in data analysis on a challenging theme. They outperformed nine other top teams in the final round, where they presented their findings to a panel of experts. This process tested not only their technical skills but also their resilience in addressing critical questions from the judges.
Their participation in EPSILON UNP 2024 is part of an ongoing journey in data analysis competitions. After finishing in second place at the same event in 2023, their success this year proves their consistency and growth in producing more in-depth and innovative work.
This project supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 8, which promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and SDG No. 11, which focuses on building sustainable cities and communities. By tackling the topic of IKN development, they have shown how data-driven analysis can serve as the foundation for planning economic development that is not only sustainable but also fair and inclusive for all members of society.
