Students of the Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), gained an international-level learning experience through an online guest lecture for the Introduction to Algebraic Structures I course, held on Wednesday (March 25), featuring Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
The lecture, conducted via Google Meet from 07:15 to 08:55 WIB, was attended by students from both regular and international classes. The presence of Prof. Nor Haniza reflects an effort to provide a global perspective in understanding algebraic structures, a subject known for its abstract nature.
The session was opened by the course lecturer, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Si., and supported by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Yeni Susanti, M.Si., and Iwan Ernanto, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.
In her presentation, Prof. Nor Haniza explained key concepts in group theory, including right cosets and left cosets, properties of cosets, subgroup indices, and Lagrange’s Theorem. The material was delivered systematically and supported with example problems to help students understand the concepts more concretely.
The lecture was conducted in an interactive atmosphere. During the session, the speaker occasionally incorporated light humor, which was warmly received by the participants. The two-way interaction between students and the speaker made the learning experience more engaging.
“The explanation was clear, and the example problems greatly helped in understanding concepts that previously felt difficult and highly abstract,” said one of the students.
Through this activity, the Mathematics Study Program of FMIPA UGM continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the quality of education through international collaboration. This activity not only deepens students’ understanding of group theory but also broadens their global perspective and strengthens their competitiveness at the international level.
