Orlando Ferrari, Best Mathematics Graduate at UGM with a Perfect 4.0 GPA in 3.5 Years

Yogyakarta – Orlando Ferrari, a student from Central Kalimantan, was officially named the best graduate of the Mathematics Study Program at the Faculty on Wednesday (26/2/2025). With a perfect GPA of 4.0, achieved in just 3.5 years, he also excelled in various national and international mathematics competitions.

However, behind his success, Orlando’s journey was filled with challenges. He initially failed to gain admission to UGM through the SNMPTN and PBUB pathways in 2021 before finally succeeding through the 2021 SBMPTN. As a student from Central Kalimantan, he often faced skepticism from others. “How can someone from Central Kalimantan get into UGM?” they would say, as he recalled. Yet, their doubts became his motivation to keep striving.

The biggest challenge came at the start of his studies when his father, the late Ir. Gianto, M.P., passed away on October 31, 2021. The loss deeply affected him. However, his father’s final words, “Keep studying hard” , became a source of strength for Orlando to persevere.

His hard work paid off. He won a bronze medal at ONMIPA PT 2022, which he upgraded to a gold medal in 2023. His achievements extended to the international stage, earning him a silver medal at the 30th International Mathematics Competition (IMC) in Bulgaria. Additionally, he was selected as the Outstanding Student at both the faculty and university levels.

In his graduation speech, Orlando shared three values he holds dear:

• Our Past: “I was once considered incapable. Even when I entered UGM, I struggled to adapt. But those experiences taught me never to give up.”
• Our Present: “We are the leaders of our own lives. The decisions we make today shape our future.”
• Our Future: “A diploma is not just proof of graduation; it is a symbol of our ability to think critically and face challenges.”

Now, Orlando is preparing to pursue higher education. For him, “Something may break me, but I always rise again.” Orlando Ferrari’s story is a testament to how determination, hard work, and faith can lead to extraordinary achievements. He is an inspiration, proving that dreams have no limits as long as one has the courage to keep moving forward.
