Community Service Program by the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, in Collaboration with the MGMP Mathematics for Senior High Schools in Surabaya

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) in collaboration with the Forum of Mathematics Teachers (MGMP) for Senior High Schools in Surabaya. The activity took place on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at SMAN 15 Surabaya, and was attended by 126 mathematics teachers from various high schools across the city.

This program reflects the academic commitment of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, to supporting the improvement of mathematics education quality at the senior high school level. It also aims to strengthen partnerships between higher education institutions and local teacher communities.

The PkM team, led by Prof. Dr. Supama, M.Si., featured several speakers from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, including Prof. Atok Zulijanto, Ph.D., Dr. Al. Sutjijana, Dr. Sutopo, M.Si., Dr. Nooma Yulia Megawati, and Dewi Kartika Sari, Ph.D..

The speakers delivered materials relevant to teachers’ professional development needs, covering topics such as Insights into the National Science Olympiad (OSN) in Mathematics, Introduction to Combinatorics, Statistics, Random Variable Distributions, Correlation and Linear Regression Analysis, and Applications of Deep Learning in Mathematics.

In his remarks, Ali Gufron, S.Pd., Chair of the MGMP Mathematics for Senior High Schools in Surabaya, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration.

“We are honored that the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, is the first higher education institution from outside East Java to establish a partnership with our MGMP. The materials presented are highly relevant and much needed by teachers. We hope this collaboration will continue and bring broader benefits to teachers and students in Surabaya,” he said.

The event was officially opened by Johanes Mardijono, S.Pd., M.M., Principal of SMAN 15 Surabaya and Advisor to the MGMP Mathematics for Senior High Schools in Surabaya.

This program is expected not only to serve as a platform for enhancing teachers’ professional capacity but also as an academic forum for exchanging ideas, promoting pedagogical innovation, and updating research-based mathematics teaching approaches. In the future, similar initiatives are expected to be developed sustainably and reach more educational communities in other regions.
