Community Service: Introducing the Role of Mathematics in Cryptography and Cybersecurity at SMA Regina Pacis Surakarta

Yogyakarta, October 10, 2025 — More than 100 twelfth-grade students from SMA Regina Pacis Surakarta participated in a short seminar titled “The Role of Mathematics in Cryptography and Cybersecurity” held at the school’s auditorium on Friday (10/10). The event aimed to introduce students to the importance of mathematics in the world of technology, particularly in the fields of cryptography and cybersecurity.

The event began at 12.00 with participant registration and a pre-test, followed by opening remarks from the Principal of SMA Regina Pacis Surakarta, Mrs. Maria Monika Wahyu Utami, at 12.35. The first session was delivered by the Poltek SSN Team with speaker Mrs. Nia Yulianti and lasted until 13.00. The team was led by Dr. Sri Rosdiana and consisted of six other members.

The second session began at 13.10 with a presentation by Dr. Uha Isnaini, a lecturer from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Dr. Uha discussed the significant role of mathematics in cryptography and cybersecurity, explaining how mathematical concepts are applied to secure data and information in the digital world, and how mathematics contributes to protecting privacy and maintaining data integrity through cryptographic methods.

Also present were other UGM team members — Dr. Iwan Ernanto, Annisa Dini Handayani (Ph.D. student), Wiwied Ishartuti (Master’s student), and Delasari K. Pantow (Master’s student) — who contributed to the smooth execution and success of the event.

At 13.30, participants took a post-test as part of the final evaluation. At the end of the program, students with the highest pre-test scores were announced and recognized for their enthusiasm and understanding of the material presented.

This workshop is expected to enhance students’ understanding of the connection between mathematics and the rapidly growing field of technology, as well as to motivate them to further explore topics related to cryptography and cybersecurity in the future.
