Universitas Gadjah Mada inaugurated a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics FMIPA, Prof. Imam Solekhudin, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., as professor of computational mathematics. The inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 24, 2023, at the Universitas Gadjah Mada Rector’s Senate Hall, which was opened directly by the Chairman of the Council of Professors, Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochammad Maksum, M.Sc.
Prof. Imam Solekhudin, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., delivered a professorial inauguration speech entitled “Overview of the Implementation of a Numerical Method in Problems of Infiltration from Irrigation Channels.” In his speech, he said that this material is included in the field of computational mathematics, which involves the fields of science and engineering, and that computing plays a central and important role.
Water is a basic need in agricultural activities. Irrigation is a vital method for various agricultural activities. An efficient irrigation system will reduce water waste. The question arises about the role of mathematics as a servant of knowledge through mathematical modeling, which is solved numerically and implemented through programming.
Mathematical modeling is the process of transforming real problems into mathematical statements to find solutions to them. Mathematical modeling begins with a problem whose solution will be determined. Then assumptions are built and solved numerically and analytically. The next step is model validation, both qualitatively and quantitatively. With this validation, we can determine whether the mathematical model is in accordance with the problem. The research he has conducted proves that mathematics plays an important role in solving existing problems.
With the confirmation of Prof. Imam Solekhudin, S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., as a professor, he is one of 380 active professors at Universitas Gadjah Mada and one of 51 professors at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
