The Role of Data in Business: A Mathematical Perspective at the Jogja Innovator Summit 2024

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Auditorium of FMIPA UGM hosted the Jogja Innovator Summit 2024, attended by Djoko Hartanto, CEO of PT Waleta Asia Jaya, along with several students from the Department of Mathematics. In this event, the role of data in the business world became one of the main topics discussed.

Djoko Hartanto emphasized that data has become an essential component in the business decision-making process. He stated that honest, accurate, and timely data significantly impacts a company’s success in facing market challenges. “Data presented in an organized dashboard simplifies the company’s ability to make strategic decisions,” Djoko remarked. While the goal of business is to achieve profit, the ability to manage data is key to ensuring that the steps taken are on target.

In his remarks, Djoko also praised the many mathematics graduates working at PT Waleta Asia Jaya, indicating that the company views data as a highly crucial aspect. However, he acknowledged that data management in Indonesia still needs improvement. “Awareness of the importance of data is still lacking in Indonesia, and this is a significant challenge that must be addressed,” Djoko said. Mathematics graduates, with their analytical skills and deep understanding of data, are expected to contribute to enhancing the quality of data management across various sectors.

This discussion is also relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). The effective and timely use of data not only supports business sustainability but also contributes to improving job quality, technological innovation, and industrial efficiency, ultimately fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

The Jogja Innovator Summit 2024 reaffirmed that data, along with technologies such as machine learning, plays a vital role in advancing the business world. With the contributions of mathematics graduates, companies can optimize data management for better decision-making while also contributing to sustainable development goals. Skills in mathematics, data analysis, and technology utilization are key to tackling increasingly complex future challenges.
