Yogyakarta, November 12, 2025 — The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), successfully held a Guest Lecture Series titled “Disaster Insurance” on November 11–12, 2025, at Meeting Room 1, 3rd Floor, FMIPA UGM. The event featured three main speakers from the industry and government sectors: Hengki Eko Putra (Research Principal, PT Reasuransi MAIPARK Indonesia), Roki Gangsar Winoto, and Muhammad Irvan Paleva (Insurance and Social Protection Team, DJPPR, Ministry of Finance).
The lecture series was organized in response to Indonesia’s high disaster risk and the growing need for collaboration among the government, industry, and academia to strengthen disaster risk mitigation systems and sustainable disaster financing mechanisms.
On the first day, Hengki Eko Putra delivered a presentation titled “Financing and Modeling Natural Disaster Risks in Indonesia: An Industry Perspective.” He emphasized the importance of data-driven disaster risk modeling to support policy and strategic decision-making in the insurance sector. He also highlighted Indonesia’s geological challenges, such as earthquake sources and ground acceleration, and advocated for the implementation of parametric insurance in the agricultural sector to protect farmers from losses caused by natural disasters.
On the second day, Roki Gangsar Winoto and Muhammad Irvan Paleva from the DJPPR, Ministry of Finance, presented various disaster risk financing programs currently being implemented by the government. They discussed regulatory aspects, funding mechanisms, and the strategic role of the insurance market in maintaining national financial sustainability. The discussion also underlined the importance of policy innovation and operational efficiency in addressing the future challenges of the insurance industry.
Through this Guest Lecture Series, participants — both academics and practitioners — were expected to gain deeper insights into the role of insurance in the national disaster mitigation system and to foster cross-sectoral collaboration in strengthening Indonesia’s financial resilience against disaster risks.
