UGM Holds Workshop Series on Explainable and Sustainable AI 2025: Introducing a New Approach Based on Interaction Spaces Theory

Yogyakarta, October 20, 2025 – The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM), organized the UGM Workshop Series on Explainable and Sustainable AI 2025 with the theme “Shaping the Future of AI: A New Approach to AI based on Interaction Spaces Theory.” The event takes place from October 20–24, 2025, at Meeting Room 1, 3rd Floor, Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM.

This workshop brings together leading researchers and students to explore the latest advancements in Explainable and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence. Over five days, participants engage in lectures, in-depth discussions, and collaborative sessions focused on developing fundamental theories for building AI systems that are more general, explainable, responsible, and sustainable for the future.

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Sekar Nugraheni, S.Si., M.Sc., Chair of the Organizing Committee, who expressed her gratitude to all participants and sponsors for their support. She emphasized the importance of active participation and interdisciplinary collaboration in fostering transparent and sustainable AI development.

Following her remarks, Dr. Nanang Susyanto, S.Si., M.Sc., M.Act.Sc., Head of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, delivered his speech, extending appreciation to all parties involved in organizing the workshop. He warmly welcomed Dr. Paolo Giordano from the University of Vienna and highlighted the crucial role of mathematics in the development and analysis of artificial intelligence.

Opening remarks were also given by Prof. Drs. Roto, M.Eng., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of FMIPA UGM, who officially inaugurated the workshop. In his speech, he underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing AI research and applications.

This workshop is made possible through the collaboration between the Department of Mathematics, Universitas Gadjah Mada, the University of Vienna, and the ASEAN-European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET).
