Community Service by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, with the Surabaya City High School Mathematics Teacher Working Group

A team from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University conducted a Community Service (PkM) activity in collaboration with the Mathematics Teachers’ Working Group (MGMP) of Senior High Schools in Surabaya City. The activity was held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at SMAN 15 Surabaya and was attended by 126 mathematics teachers from various high schools in Surabaya City.

This PkM activity is part of the academic commitment of the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, to support the improvement of mathematics education quality at the high school level, while strengthening partnerships between higher education institutions and the teacher community in the region. The PkM team, led by Prof. Dr. Supama, M.Si., also featured speakers from the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, including Prof. Atok Zulijanto, Ph.D., Dr. Al. Sutjijana, Dr. Sutopo, M.Si., Dr. Nooma Yulia Megawati, and Dewi Kartika Sari, Ph.D.. The speakers presented materials relevant to the needs of strengthening teachers’ competencies, including: An Overview of the National Science Olympiad (OSN) in Mathematics, An Introduction to Combinatorics, Statistics, Random Variable Distribution, Correlation and Linear Regression Analysis, and the Application of Deep Learning in Mathematics.

Ali Gufron, S.Pd., Chair of the Surabaya High School Mathematics MGMP, said in his speech, “We are honored that the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM, is the first university outside East Java to collaborate with our MGMP. The material provided is very relevant and needed by teachers. We hope this collaboration does not stop here but continues to provide broader benefits for teachers and students in Surabaya.” The PkM event was officially opened by Johanes Mardijono, S.Pd., M.M., as the Principal of SMAN 15 Surabaya and Advisor to the Mathematics Teachers’ Association for Senior High Schools in Surabaya City.

This activity is expected to not only serve as a forum for developing teachers’ professional capacities, but also as an academic forum that facilitates the exchange of ideas, pedagogical innovation, and the renewal of research-based approaches to mathematics learning. It is hoped that this type of community service activity can be developed sustainably and reach more educational communities in other regions.
