Day Two of MIPA Expo 2025: Discovering the Beauty and Role of Science in Everyday Life

Yogyakarta, October 23, 2025 — The second and final day of the MIPA Expo 2025 once again brought an atmosphere of excitement at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UGM. The event featured a series of MIPA Talk sessions presenting two inspiring speakers from different fields, both demonstrating how science can be broadly applied in everyday life.

The first speaker, Brian Arianto Tanuwidjaja, an outstanding student from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM, delivered a talk titled “Beauty in Science.” Brian gained public recognition after becoming a finalist in Clash of Champions, a national knowledge competition that brought together 40 top university students from across Indonesia, initiated by Ruangguru.

In his session, Brian invited the audience to view science from a more beautiful and applicable perspective. He illustrated how scientific research can be used to solve everyday problems, such as finding effective solutions for acne treatment through studies on diet and lifestyle.

“Science is beautiful because it can be applied in so many ways. In every research process, there is a kind of beauty that makes us grateful,” Brian said.

Brian also shared his academic journey—from being a science medalist in high school to becoming one of UGM’s outstanding students. He emphasized the importance of time management, discipline, and courage in facing failures.

“Failure is not the end of everything. What matters is that we’ve done our best,” he reflected.

After his talk, Brian visited the Department of Mathematics booth, where he tried various interactive games, including “Three Curtains”, which illustrates statistical concepts in decision-making.

The second session featured Alif Hijriah, Commissioner at PT Cerebrum Edukanesia Nusantara and an alumnus of the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) with a background in mathematics. His talk, titled “When Numbers Build the Future,” emphasized that science—especially mathematics and physics—is present in every aspect of life.

“Numbers have changed civilization. Before the Arabic numeral system was discovered, we used Roman numerals, which were difficult for calculation. The invention of zero even became the foundation for the birth of computers,” Alif explained.

He further noted that mathematics opens up a wide range of modern career opportunities—not only in education but also in fields such as data science and data analysis.

“Mathematics helps us think logically and solve problems. Everything in the world can be described through mathematical functions,” he added.

Before starting his talk, Alif also took time to visit the Department of Mathematics booth, where he tried the “Three Curtains” and “Finding Princess” games. Through these games, Alif and mathematics students discussed how probability and decision-making concepts can be explained in a fun and accessible way.

With the conclusion of the second day’s activities, the MIPA Expo 2025 officially came to a close. Over the course of two days, the event successfully drew enthusiastic participation, combining science, creativity, and interactivity into one inspiring celebration within FMIPA UGM.
