COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES: APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICS IN FINANCIAL STATISTICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL INDUSTRY IN BALIKPAPAN, ALONG WITH CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY LEVEL

Balikpapan, Monday, October 23, 2023 – Balikpapan once again takes the spotlight in the field of education and mathematical development through a community service event held on Monday, October 23, 2023. This activity can be realized through the collaboration supported by the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) with the aim of supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), related to the application of mathematics in the healthcare industry (SDG 3), Cryptography (SDG 16), Statistics (SDG 8), Geographic Information System (GIS) (SDG 11), and, of course, institutional cooperation (SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals). The event encompasses two main topics: “Application of Mathematics in Financial Statistics” and “Application of Mathematics in Industry and Environment.” The participants in this event include mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science students from ITK.

This event represents a collective effort to bring the tangible benefits of mathematics to the Balikpapan community, with a focus on its applications in two crucial areas. The first is the “Application of Mathematics in Financial Statistics.” In this segment, participants are guided to understand the role of mathematics in financial statistical analysis. The material is presented by Dr. Gunardi and Dr. Adhitya Ronnie Effendie, followed by a Kahoot quiz conducted by the young lecturers from UGM, Muhammad Fahruli Wahyujati. The second topic is the “Application of Mathematics in Industry and Environment.” In this part, participants will gain insight into how mathematics can be applied in the industrial and environmental sectors. The material is presented by Dr. Indarsih and continued by Uha Isnaini, Ph.D. Through these presentations, it is hoped that participants will comprehend the role of mathematics in addressing various challenges in different aspects of life. Mathematics is not just isolated theory but a powerful tool for problem-solving, process optimization, and sustainable solutions.

In parallel, a sharing session was held with speakers Prof. Sri Wahyuni and Dr. Solikhatun regarding curriculum, covering the following topics. Participants in this session were primarily faculty members, especially those in department and program leadership roles at ITK. The first topic focused on curriculum development and the academic field at UGM. The subsequent topic revolved around the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program within the curriculum. The final topic pertained to integrating research and community service into department/course subjects at UGM. The event concluded with a shared lunch, providing a platform for further discussion.
