Connecting Theory with Practice: UGM Mathematics Students’ Visit to Poltek SSN

Bogor, February 19, 2024 – Four undergraduate students from the Mathematics Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) had the opportunity to visit the National Cyber and Crypto Polytechnic (Poltek SSN) on February 19 and 20, 2024. The event took place on Jl. Raya H. Usa, Putat Nutug, Kec. Ciseeng, Bogor Regency, West Java. Indriani Safitri, Richard Tormin Octavian, Amrul Fadhil Yofan, and Nisa Ayu Azzahra were hosted at Poltek SSN for a series of activities aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills in cryptography.

The research titles brought by the students were:

  1. Indriani Safitri with “Lattice-Based Module-LWE Cryptosystem”
  2. Richard Tormin Octavian focusing on “Module-Lattice Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism”
  3. Amrul Fadhil Yofan researching “Arithmetic Ratio-Based Cryptographic Attacks on the RSA Cryptosystem”
  4. Nisa Ayu Azzahra focusing on “Simple Matrix Cryptography System”

The purpose of this visit was to bridge theory with practice and to facilitate the exchange of insights and the latest research findings in the field of cryptography, which is a key aspect of maintaining information security in the digital era.

Over two days, the students participated in various activities at Poltek SSN, including morning prayers, sports, joint exercises, and communal meals, which not only enhanced discipline and togetherness but also integrated them into life at Poltek SSN.

The main agenda of the visit was the research presentations by the four students, giving them the opportunity to share their research outcomes and receive constructive feedback from Poltek SSN’s lecturers and students. In-depth discussions with six lecturers at Poltek SSN also helped to enrich their understanding of the practical applications of cryptography.

Co-curricular Sit-In activities, such as Information Security Audit, Junior Penetration Tester, and Security Operation Center, provided practical experience in cybersecurity and cryptography.

Through these activities, students can expand their insights and skills in the field of cryptography, build professional networks, and gain inspiration for further research. This experience prepares them to become leaders in the field of cryptography and cybersecurity. It supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically number 4 on quality education, number 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure, and number 11 on sustainable cities and communities.

This visit symbolizes the commitment of the cooperation between UGM and Poltek SSN in developing talents ready to face the challenges of information security in the digital era while also making a real contribution to the development of education, innovation, and sustainable communities.
