UGM Community Service in Lampung: Strengthening Contextual Mathematics Learning and Digital Literacy for the Younger Generation

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the Association of Mathematics Doctoral Alumni (KAS3MAT) FMIPA UGM, the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA, Universitas Lampung (UNILA), the Lampung Provincial Office of Education and Culture, and the Mathematics Teachers’ Working Group (MGMP) of Lampung Province, organized a Community Service (PkM) program at the Department of Mathematics, UNILA, on June 8–9, 2026. The program was held under the theme, “Contextual Mathematics Learning through a Computational Thinking Approach for Teachers and the Enhancement of Financial Literacy and Data Security Awareness for High School Students from an Early Age.”
The event was officially opened by the Dean of FMIPA UNILA, Dr. Eng. Heri Satria, M.Si., and attended by Marzuki, S.E., M.M., representing the Head of the Lampung Provincial Office of Education and Culture, as well as Zaidir Yulianto, M.Pd., Chair of the Senior High School Mathematics MGMP of Lampung Province. During the event, an Implementation of Agreement (IA) between FMIPA UGM and FMIPA UNILA was also signed. The agreement was signed by the Dean of FMIPA UNILA and the Vice Dean for Alumni Affairs, Collaboration, and Innovation of FMIPA UGM, Prof. Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si.

The Community Service program took the form of a workshop focusing on enhancing teachers’ competencies in addressing the challenges of mathematics education in the digital era, applying logical reasoning in mathematics instruction, and introducing quantitative knowledge and mathematical reasoning tests. The workshop was attended by approximately 40 senior high school mathematics teachers from across Lampung Province and featured three keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Julan Hernadi, M.Si. (education expert, Chair of KAS3MAT, and lecturer at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan), Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti (UGM lecturer), and Dr. Indarsih, M.Si. (UGM lecturer and head of the Community Service program).

Strengthening the computational thinking approach in mathematics education was the primary focus of the workshop. Participants were equipped with strategies for designing learning activities that integrate the stages of problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design as a systematic thinking framework. The participating teachers also received hands-on training in the use of computational technologies, including Python, Microsoft Excel, and GeoGebra, to support more interactive and contextual mathematics learning. This approach is expected to enhance students’ critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Alongside the workshop, a guest lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, M.Si., followed by a research-sharing session on graph theory presented by doctoral students from the Mathematics Doctoral Program, FMIPA UGM, Annisa Dini Handayani, M.Si., and Felicia Servina Djuang, M.Si.

On the second day, the Community Service team continued its activities at SMA Al Kautsar Bandar Lampung. Grade 10 and Grade 11 students were encouraged to develop financial literacy from an early age through a session delivered by Dr. Adhitya Ronnie Effendie, M.Sc. They were also introduced to cryptography and graph theory by Felicia Servina Djuang, M.Si., and Annisa Dini Handayani, S.ST., M.Si. During this session, the students were also introduced to the academic programs offered by the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM.
