Preserving Local Wisdom: UGM Community Proudly Wears Traditional Javanese Attire Every Thursday Pon

Yogyakarta, March 7, 2024 – In order to implement cultural values and strengthen identity as a National University and Cultural Center, as well as a follow-up to the Circular Letter of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Number: 400.5.9.1/40 regarding the Use of Traditional Javanese Attire in Yogyakarta in 2024, Universita Gadjah Mada (UGM) invites educators, educational staff, and students to wear traditional Javanese attire every Thursday Pon.

Traditional Javanese attire from Yogyakarta, commonly known as “Jogja Istimewa,” has its own distinctive features with batik and strong color accents. The entire academic community from various units at UGM enthusiastically participates in this activity by wearing traditional attire such as batik, kebaya, and traditional Javanese clothing. This marks a special moment showcasing the Department of Mathematics’ involvement in supporting SDGs point 4, improving the quality of education by preserving cultural values and heritage, and point 16, fostering campus community unity for local peace and stability.

Mrs. Susiana and other staff from the Mathematics Department expressed, “We are proud to contribute to preserving Javanese Yogyakarta culture, especially within the campus environment. This activity is not only about wearing traditional clothing but also nurturing love for local identity and strengthening unity amidst diversity.”

Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed, Sp.OG(K), Ph.D., as the rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, through her circular on Simaster, urged educators, educational staff, and students to wear regional traditional attire every Thursday Pon starting from Thursday Pon, February 1, 2024, as a form of implementing the identity of Gadjah Mada University as a National University and Cultural Center.

This program is expected to be one of a series of activities supporting cultural preservation and enriching social experiences at UGM. As a leading university in Indonesia, UGM is committed to continuously involving employees and students in efforts to promote cultural diversity. Students are expected not only to be agents of change in terms of knowledge but also in preserving the rich cultural values of Indonesia.
