Mini Symposium on Statistics and its Application

On November 20, 2021, the UGM Mathematics Department through the Statistics Laboratory and the Statistics Computation Laboratory, in collaboration with the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) held a Mini Symposium on Statistics and its Applications. The activity which is part of “The 5th IndoMS International Conference on Mathematics and Its Applications (IICMA)” is dedicated to the senior professor of Statistics UGM, namely

  1. Prof. Suryo Guritno, Ph.D.
  2. (late) Prof. Dr. H. Zanzawi Soejoeti
  3. (Almh) Prof. Dr. Sri Haryatmi
  4. Prof. Drs. Subanar, Ph.D.

In this activity, two speakers who are alumni of Statistics UGM were invited, namely Mr. Edy Kristianto from Bank Indonesia, Jakarta, and Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Budiantara, M.Sc. from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya.

This mini symposium started at 13.00 WIB and was opened by the Head of the UGM Mathematics Department, Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, M.Sc. The activity was then filled with presentations from the two speakers moderated by Dr. Adhitya Ronnie Effendi, M.Sc., M.Sc. The first presentation was given by Mr. Edy Kristianto from Bank Indonesia. In his presentation, he explained his experiences while studying at Statistics UGM student and working at Bank Indonesia. In the middle of the presentation, He also conveyed the memories he had with the senior professor of Statistics UGM. The session then continued by presentation of Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Budiantara, M.Sc. which was started by conveying memories when he was a student at UGM, including memories with senior professors of Statistics UGM. He then continued the presentation by describing the development of mixed estimators in nonparametric regression. The symposium was then closed with the delivery of impressions and messages from senior professors at Statistics UGM or their representatives.

The mini symposium, which was held through Zoom, went smoothly in general. Approximately around 60 participants attended, most of which were Statistics UGM alumni. By holding of this mini symposium, hopefully participants will not only gain additional knowledge about statistical developments and their applications, but also will be able to strengthen the friendship with senior professors at Statistics UGM or family representatives who were present. Hopefully in the future, the statistics will develop even more rapidly and there will be more professors in this field.
